When all is said and done, we all love it and we all love to talk about it. But we especially like to do it, and once we’ve done it once, we love to do it all over again…
…it’s important to try new things, said the marriage counsellor to the thief…there’s too much confusion and I can’t get no relief…
We recognise the importance of keeping the setlist fresh, which is why we dedicate ourselves to unfurling the tendrils of nostalgia and fathoming out the best ‘new’ old tunes to spice up your synapses.
I don’t want to tell you straight, because I’d prefer you to find out yourselves, but…
In the last month, we’ve thrown several cuts of Tainted Love into a melting pot and forged our own version, which leans respectfully towards the original Gloria Jones version rather than the watered down osmotic offering by 1980’s electro-pop cottagers, Soft Cell. It’s a storming addition to the setlist and already a crowd favourite.
Sticking with the 80’s, we’ve bashed heads with Strummer’s ghost and tried to pay tribute to The Clash’s mainstream rip-roarer, Rock The Casbah. Making it’s debut fittingly at Bar XLR, it ping-ponged the wronguns right between the eyes!
Moving on to the nineties, Tubthumping, the underdog anthem from Chumbawumba, made it’s debut at the Duck as an encore and left the assembled masses on a satisfyingly high note. It’s a belter, an antidote to a downtrodden week at the heel of your big-footed blunderboss, with the cock-eyed view of the goalposts. You know the one…
Where next you ask? It’s a charity gala celebrating the efforts of TREM (look it up) on Saturday 13th September at The Berrylands in Surbiton. We’ve got an hour from 8.30pm, free entry as always. Come on down for a double Shandy or a cheeky Pimms.
What do we see when we look in the mirror? To quote one of John Candy’s best movies: “I see pride. I see power. I see a bad-ass mother that don’t take no crap from nobody!”
And so should you!
Believe in better, you deserve it.
